Brain motivational systems

During evolution of both birds and mammals, two sets of behavioral repertoire have been conserved, tailored at adaptation to environments with high vs. low levels of resources. These are called proactive and reactive temperaments, respectively.Within populations, both temperaments are represented, in order to increase adaptability to changing environmental conditions at the group level, and because (e.g. social) resources are distributed unequally over individuals, depending amongst other things on social ranking orders. Furthermore, the underlying brain motivational/emotional systems are represented in each individual, to increase adaptability to changing environmental conditions at the level of the individual.
In humans, the proactive and reactive temperaments are reflected roughly in the Big 2 of temperament research: extraversion and neuroticism, respectively. A model by Don Tucker describes dorsal and ventral cortical systems in the brain that regulate proactive behavior/emotion and reactive behavior/emotion, respectively. I will elaborate on this model using results from recent neuroimaging studies. The dorsal systems seem to modulate limbic emotions in order to facilitate adaptive proactive behavior and have a positive emotional bias, while ventral systems seem to amplify limbic emotions, leading to momentary (emotional and non-emotional) feedback control of behavior and have a negative emotional bias.
Furthermore, I will argue that integrating Pavlov’s arousal theory with this model greatly increases its explaining power. The model is relevant to disorders such as social anxiety, atypical depression, fibromyalgia, ADHD, migraine and narcolepsy. Early experiences and parenting seem to be important indicators of environmental resources and to have effects on the development of ventral systems
