Julius Horsthuis has worked in computer graphics since 2004 and has started experimenting with fractal environments in 2013. Since then, his art has gained a lot of momentum. From an installation at Burning Man, to producing an entire music video for Meshuggah, to being a regular VJ at Ruigoord's Trance Orient Express parties, his art reaches a wide and growing audience. He has recently started using neural style transfer, which is based on deep learning techniques, as an additional tool in his art. This is what he's going to tell us about his process:
When creating fractals, I feel more like an explorer than a painter. The exploration of the vast landscapes that exist in the mathematics is a wonderful feeling, and in order to convey some of that feeling to the audience, I will treat this talk as if I'm a tour guide.
I'll take the audience through some of the fractal landscapes. We will look at some of the characteristic features of those fractals, almost like we're watching architectural facets. What creates those features? What is it about fractal math that makes it so engaging? What else is there to explore?"
