Prof. Dr. James L. Mc Clelland is currently affiliated with the Department of Psychology in Stanford. Also he is the director of the Center for Mind, Brain and Computation at the Stanford University in the USA. This lecture is part of the lecture series of the Cognitive Science Centre Amsterdam (CSCA).I will describe the complementary learning systems framework for memory, which postulates a gradual incremental learning system widely distributed across neocortex and other structures for the gradual extraction of structure from experience, complemented by a fast learning system in hippocampus and related medial temporal lobe areas. I will show how these systems can work together synergistically to address conceptual development, normal performance in adulthood, and disordered memory performance in a variety of neurological conditions including amnesia due to medial temporal lobe damage and semantic dementia. Cooperative engagement of the two learning systems in normal memory, including new simulations demonstrating how this cooperation occurs, will be emphasized in the presentation.
