DescriptionIs technology able to evolve in a way similar to biological evolution? This is the main question during the mini-symposium Rise of the Machemes. We will do a little technological experiment to see if we can prove technological evolution.
Chairman: Bas Haring
Talks:
Bas Haring - Introduction
Lola Hesp (designer) - The Selfish Gene Project http://www.theselfishgene.nl/
Prof. Dr. Arie Verhagen (cognitive linguist) - Technology, language and cultural evolution http://www.arieverhagen.nl/
Ella Keijzer (Media Technology) - graduation project Rise of the Machemes - how technology creates itself
On the wall: the poster-collection of Robert Horn: 'Mapping GreatDebates: Can Computers Think?'
Afterwards:
Twitter-Fortune cookies and Pixel cupcakes (by Kirsten en Alfons)
Digital feedback music by Jelle Herold
When we have the mood and the time, we will watch the documentary 'Technocalyps'
Abstract Lola Hesp:
The Selfish Gene Project (2007) is a project in which a series of lamps is determined by genes. Lola Hesp will show what a Selfish Gene lamp looks like, she will explain the system that lies behind this appearance and she will show how new generations of lamps can be formed.
Abstract Ella Keijzer:
Machemes consist of technological information and are supposed to be the new replicators that follow the rules of Darwinian evolution. In this research I show that by creating a simple piece of software set loose it in the quantity of information and technology, evolution will arise spontaneously. During my presentation we will do a Twitter-experiment and try to let it evolve.
Peers of review:
